Things I Love…”On Writing” by Stephen King

One of my favorite books on writing is, well, “On Writing” by Stephen King. It played a big role in helping me get out of a past writer’s slump. (There’s a reason the book is having its 10th Anniversary.) King outlines some very specific and practical advice for writers that I found refreshing – none of that “oh, just do what works for you” mumbo jumbo. One of my favorite moments of the book is when he details the phone call he received when he learned of his first book contract – very moving. I recommend it for any writer, maybe especially those that are looking for a good kick over the old writer’s block.

“Memories Wait Alone” promotional materials

I’ve been working hard this week on coming up with a promotional design I can use for my Historical Fiction book Memories Wait Alone. I’ve put this as a top priority as I know I need to allow time for printing/shipping and I’m a standstill until I receive these.

My plan was to use a version of the cover design so a potential customer could locate the book itself (if the promotional materials have done their job and piqued their interest…). After much discussion and several revisions, here’s a look at the final poster design. Instead of a tagline, I went for descriptive words of the main character himself, Cecil Sherbowe. Each word represents an important part of his character. The black and white photo and the word “Aristocrat” sets the time period of the novel. I wanted to put some sort of link to my social media or how to contact me, so my website address is located at the bottom left.

I think bookmarks are a great advertising tool (who doesn’t want to grab a free bookmark!?) but finding a cost effective printer took some research. We finally found a great deal on Overnightprints.com that allowed the order to make sense. I invested in 500 bookmarks but I believe it will be worth it. Here are the front/back designs for the bookmark.

I think its fantastic that these tools are in our hands and – if you do your research – pretty darn affordable. More power to the author!

“Memories Wait Alone” – available in print!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000448_00019]

Super excited that my Historical Fiction novella “Memories Wait Alone” is now available in print! I wrote this story several years ago and spent my maternity leave with my daughter editing it (because I had nothing else going on…right!? *note extreme sarcasm*). After some cover updates, I recently relaunched the story as a Kindle E-book. But there is nothing like the feeling of seeing your book as real book!

Here’s a synopsis of the story:

It is 1885 and Cecil Sherbowe has everything he could ever want in life. He has led a privileged childhood, raised in a large estate nestled in the plains of the English countryside. He is in line to inherit his family’s property. That is, if he can fulfill his father’s archaic wishes. Under the watchful eye of his cantankerous caretaker Ananias, Cecil is ordered to spend several months working in the poverty stricken village of The Deverills. Intending to break him of his vanity and pride, instead his months at The Deverills introduce Cecil to a new infatuation – a beautiful village woman named Natalie. When he is forced to choose between her and his freedom, Cecil spends years chasing after his lost love, from the Boer War of Africa to the speakeasies of 1920’s New York City. In order to reunite with the woman he loves, Cecil may have to lose everything along the way.

Right now the book is only available on Amazon but I’m working on getting copies in local bookstores soon. If you happen to get a copy – thank you so much! – and please leave a review. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
